There is no airport on the Gili Islands, so every visitor arrives by boat. It is simpler than it sounds once you know the options.
From Bali, the usual route is a fast boat from Padang Bai, Serangan, Sanur or Benoa Harbour. The crossing takes between one and a half and two and a half hours depending on the port and the sea, and costs roughly IDR 350,000 to 600,000 one way. Most boats run straight to Gili Trawangan harbour, with some calling at Gili Air and Gili Meno on the way. Padang Bai is the fastest crossing; Serangan suits anyone staying in Seminyak, Kuta or Nusa Dua.
If you would rather keep the sea leg short, fly Denpasar to Lombok — about 25 minutes — then drive an hour and a half to Bangsal Harbour and take a 15 to 20 minute speedboat across.
Already in Lombok? Bangsal is the departure point. A speedboat runs IDR 150,000 to 250,000 and leaves frequently through the day, while the public ferry is the cheapest crossing at IDR 15,000 to 30,000 on a fixed schedule.
Book ahead in July, August and December, choose a morning departure for calmer seas, and pack light — boarding often means a short wade through shallow water.
