A short drive from Natya Hotel Tanah Lot, Kedungu Beach is one of Bali’s more overlooked stretches of coast — soft black sand, rolling waves and rice fields running almost to the water’s edge.
It is a good place to learn to surf. The swell here is consistent and forgiving enough for a first lesson while still holding enough push for experienced surfers, and the surf schools along the shore are relaxed and professional about it.
Late in the day Kedungu turns into a sunset beach. Locals, surfers and travellers drift along the sand as the sky goes gold and pink over the Indian Ocean, usually with a coconut or something from the nearby warungs in hand. Photographers get a golden hour here that is hard to match.
What Kedungu does not have is the crowd of Canggu or Seminyak. The road in passes rice terraces, palms and grazing cows, and the atmosphere stays rural. It is a place to slow down.
Natya Hotel Tanah Lot is a few kilometres away, with the pool, the restaurant and Tanah Lot Temple all waiting when the surf is done.
